Shamiri Institute

Shamiri means "thrive". Since 2019, we have provided accessible and effective mental health care to 100,000s of young people across Africa and beyond.

Our model: We train 18-to-22-year-olds as lay-providers to deliver effective low-touch therapy within a tiered caregiving model.

  • Lay-providers: 18-22-year-olds provide group therapy with just 10 hours of training. Our Shamiri Fellows lead therapy groups consisting of youths aged 6-to-15. Each group session lasts for one hour. Protocols for recruiting, training, and supervising Shamiri Fellows have been peer-reviewed in clinical journals.
  • Low-touch therapy: This includes brief, low-stigma interventions targeting overall human functioning. Our low-touch therapy is the Shamiri intervention, which consists of three simple, positive psychological elements: 1) growth mindset, 2) gratitude, and 3) value affirmations. These elements target core beliefs about self and the world to generate an upward spiral of positive beliefs, thoughts, and behavior.
  • Tiered caregiving: Lay-providers are supported by a clinical supervisor and clinical network ties. Clinical Supervisors provide clinical oversight and one-on-one psychotherapy. Triaging to Clinical Experts (psychologists & psychiatrists) allows for escalation and intensive care.
